| The Government Housing Bank (GHB) is the government specialized financial institution established in 1953 under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance with the purpose of providing mortgage loans to low and medium income home-buyers. The Bank also acted as a real estate developer at the beginning period, but this function was stopped after the government established the National Housing Authority (NHA) in 1972. This left the GHB with only one function of providing mortgage loans. However, in January 1997 the Bank was approved to expand its business to other related businesses including developer lending facilities and an acquisition of mortgage loan portfolios from other banks. The bank is able to mobilize funds via deposits in current, savings and term accounts, long term domestic borrowings and issuance of bonds, and offshore borrowings. |
